Beyond The Squares
the Lowcountry wedding photographer
Couples getting married in Savannah are usually looking at Bluffton, Hilton Head and Jekyll Island too. So here is the rest of the coast I know, from someone who works it all the time.
One Coast, Very Different Weddings
Savannah is brick, iron and squares. An hour away you are looking at marsh, tidal rivers and oaks that have been there longer than anything else around them. A wedding at the Jekyll Island Club feels nothing like one under the Liberty Oak at Harbour Town, and neither one feels like a house at Oldfield with the marsh behind it.
What they share is the light and the moss. That is why I keep coming back to all of these places, and why the way I plan a day in Savannah carries over so well. Read how I think about the light and you will see what I mean.
How To Choose
- Want a big historic estate? Look at Jekyll Island.
- Want a resort with the water and the lighthouse? Look at Sea Pines.
- Want it private and quiet? Look at Oldfield, and ask early, because it hosts a limited number of weddings each year.
- Want the full luxury weekend? Look at Montage Palmetto Bluff.
- Want a city your guests can walk? Savannah is still my first love.

Lowcountry Questions
Do you photograph weddings outside Savannah?
Yes. Savannah is home. I have also shot about 10 weddings on Jekyll Island, about 10 at Palmetto Bluff in Bluffton and about 5 at Sea Pines, and I have worked at Oldfield about 3 times.
Do I need a different marriage license in South Carolina?
Yes. A Georgia license is for a ceremony in Georgia. Hilton Head and Bluffton weddings use a South Carolina license, and Beaufort County has a 24 hour waiting period.
How far are these places from Savannah?
Bluffton and Oldfield are usually under an hour, Hilton Head is about an hour, and Jekyll Island is around two hours. Check your own route for the day of the week and the season.
